Joyce Heino Obituary

Joyce Marie Ollie was born in New York Mills, Minnesota on March 23, 1929 to Arthur and Selma Ollie. She grew up on the family farm north of New York Mills. Joyce graduated from the New York Mills Public School and attended the Stockman Beauty School in Minneapolis, MN.

After graduating from beauty college, Joyce returned to New York Mills where she was united in marriage to Jorma “Mickey” Heino on November 5, 1952 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

After marriage, Joyce and Mickey settled in New York Mills and began their careers and family. Joyce worked many years as a beautician starting at Pansy’s Beauty Shop in Wadena and then in New York Mills with her friend, Bea Setterholm. Joyce dedicated herself to raising their family of four children and then embarked on a career with the New York Mills Public School, retiring from her position with the Elementary School Library. After Joyce retired from her position in the library, she and Mickey traveled and spent those golden years taking very good care of their grandchildren. Joyce was an excellent baker and renowned in her family for her immaculate housekeeping skills. She was an avid crossword solver for years, stopping by her sisters every morning to review their answers to the newspaper’s daily puzzle. Joyce wrote devotedly in a daily journal, leaving her family with all the wonderful memories of her retired years. In the last few years Joyce had resided at Willow Creek Assisted Living in Henning, MN. Her final days were spent in New York Mills at Julie and Darin’s home under the gentle care of the Red River Valley Hospice.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey, who died on June 16, 2002. She is survived by her 4 children, Barbara (Dennis) Edwards, Mark (Colette Erickson) Heino, Merry Jo (Michael) Thompson and Julie (Darin “Doob”) Welter; seven grandchildren, Jesse (Katie) Edwards, Andrew Edwards, Brea (Travis Ehrreich) Welter, Kelsey (Ryan) Hammer, Evan (Alyssa Olson) Welter, Mackenna Thompson and Nicholas Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Cooper Edwards, Brody and Maverick Hammer; one sister, Dagmar Bernu; and one brother-in-law, Tom Cassidy; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Beside her husband, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, five brothers, and their respective spouses. Also, preceding her were Mickey’s sisters, brothers, and their respective spouses.

Joyce will be dearly missed and forever loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
