Marie Sydow

Marie Ida Friehl was born on August 10, 1917 at the family farm in Corliss Township, rural Perham, Minnesota.  Her parents were the late Charles Henry and Clara Marie (Stoldt) Friehl.  Marie grew up on the family farm in Corliss Township.  She attended Country School in Corliss and Pine Lake Township.  On June 6, 1936 Marie was united in marriage to Rufus Stoltz.  Their marriage was blessed with 3 children.  Marie and Rufus made their home south of New York Mills where they farmed.  Rufus passed away on September 22, 1961.  

On March 12, 1962, Marie was united in marriage to Ernest Sydow at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minnesota.  Marie and Ernest made their home and farmed in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills.  In 1981, Marie and Ernest retired from farming and in 1991 they moved to New York Mills. Ernest passed away on September 22, 2000, at the Elder’s Home in New York Mills, Minnesota.  Marie enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, sewing, fishing and especially ice fishing. Marie volunteered at the Elders' Home and Senior Center until she was 95. She used to take care of all the flowerbeds at the Elders' Home. 

On August 22, 2019 Marie passed away peacefully at the Hadley House in Perham at 102 years of age.  She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Marie in death were her parents; husbands: Rufus Stoltz and Ernest Sydow; daughters: Lillian Graham and Clara Thompson; sister and brother-in-law: Martha (Rudy) Maijala; brothers and sister-in-law: Elmer (Lydia) Friehl and Earl Friehl; son-in-law: Bill Kelley; and granddaughter Lori Kimber.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Lila (Ron) Johnson of Ottertail; 9 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, James Thompson Sr.; many other relatives and a host of friends.
