Helen Miller Obituary

Helen was born on October 9, 1930 at home in the town of Leaf Lake.  She was the daughter of William and Helen (Paatalo) Maunumaki. Helen was baptized and confirmed in the Apostolic Lutheran faith.  She grew up in the town of Leaf Lake and in the seventh grade she and her family moved to the town of Otto, where they farmed.  She was a 1948 graduate of New York Mills High School.  Helen attended the Normal School in Park Rapids for teacher training for one year and Summer School at Bemidji State.  She taught at rural schools for three years and married Lloyd Miller on July 5, 1952 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills.  They were blessed with two children.

Helen and Lloyd lived in Chisolm, Babbitt and in 1955 they moved to Silver Bay, where Lloyd worked for the Reserve Mining Co.  They lived in Silver Bay for 30 years, where she was an active member of the PTA, Girl Scouts, serving as a scout leader.  She and Lloyd were members of the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay where she was active on the Mission Circle, Woman’s Guild, Adah Circle and several other organizations.  Helen and Lloyd, after Lloyd’s retirement in 1988, moved to Menahga and Spider Lake at Nevis, MN.  Following Lloyd’s death on February 7, 1996, Helen continued to reside in Menahga. She was an active member the Menahga Apostolic Lutheran Church, where she served on the church board and as treasurer since 1988.

Helen enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, quilting, crafts, volunteering at the nursing home, the hiking club in Silver Bay, and spending time with her family and friends.

On June 8, 2019 Helen passed away at her home in Menahga, MN. Preceding Helen in death was her husband Lloyd, parents, brother Billy Maunumaki and sister Kay Frangos.

She is survived by her children:  Vicki Jean Williams of Severance, CO; Terrence (Kathryn) Miller of Eagan, MN;  5 grandchildren: Amber (Matt) Isborn of Severance, CO; Aaron Williams of Denver, CO; Andrew Williams of Thornton, CO; Elizabeth (Andrew)Tremblay of Philadelphia, PA; Carolyn Miller of St. Paul, MN; 2 great-grandchildren: Hanna Grace and Elissa Faith Isborn of Severance, CO;  1 step-great-grandson: James Isborn of Greeley, CO; 3 sisters: Betty (Harvey) Warren of Sebeka, MN; Phoebe (Ervin) Lake of LaHabra, CA; Karen Galarneau of St. Anthony, MN; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, Helen requested memorials in her honor be made to the Apostolic Church of New York Mills or a charity of your choice.
