Marvin "Bud" Becker Obituary

Marvin Becker, age 87, of Deer Creek, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 9, 2024, at the Centra Care Hospital Long Prairie, MN after living at the Central Todd County Care Center (Clarissa) for the past 4 months.

Marvin Eugene (Bud) Becker was born June 5, 1936, to Elmer and Selma (Wardien) Becker. He was baptized July 19, 1936, and confirmed June 18, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek where he served on the Board of Education, as general treasurer, and (believe it or not) was in the mixed choir! Bud was drafted into the Navy in March 1956 and served in the pacific as Enginemen third class until being discharged in late 1957. In 1962, Bud married Judy Post of Henning and was blessed with four children. The couple lived west of Deer Creek farming and raising his favorite black angus cows for about 10 years. Eventually the family moved to Oak Valley township where Bud farmed and raised livestock while working for Otter Tail County highway department in maintenance and plowing snow for 26 years.

Bud graduated in 1955 from Deer Creek High School where he received 14 letters in sports for track, football, basketball, and of course baseball. The Becker boys, Bud, Don, David, John, Dale, and Ace all played baseball and were known for their prowess. Bud started at age 15 filling in as catcher for a missing player and which started a 17-year career playing for the Deer Creek Cardinals. He was also a bowler for men’s teams and mixed doubles. Bud enjoyed deer hunting and never missed a chance to tell a good story. Bud loved driving in his Chevrolet pickup around the county looking for deer and meeting the men for coffee, visiting at the sales barn in Perham and attending local meat raffles and playing pull tabs at local establishments. He enjoyed playing whist and pinochle with friends and family. He also was known for his joy of giving newborn babies his “Spit Happens” bibs. Bud was very outgoing; he loved meeting new people and always remembered a face and treasured the friends he had.

He was preceded in death by his sister: Glenyce Zinter; brother: David; brothers-in-law: Richard Boe, Pete Onstad, Herb Zinter, and Rich Sinkler; nephews: Kevin Boe and Chad Becker; parents: Elmer and Selma Becker; father and mother-in-law: Babe and Irma Post; sister-in-law: Joann Post; and brothers-in-law: Loren and Bill Post.

He is survived by his wife: Judy; sisters: Julie Boe; Carol Sinkler; Norma Onstad; Janet (Gary) Jacobson; brothers: Don (Mavis); Dale (Jackie); John (Ethel); and Ace (Cindy); sister-in-law: Wilma (David) Becker; children: Jay of Maple Plain; Penny (Bruce) Schmidgall of Hancock; Reggie (Kim) of Zimmerman; and Ginger Line of Browerville; grandchildren: Samantha, Bryce, Mason, Parker (Fiancé Hailey) and Gage Schmidgall; Madalynn, Emma, and Maya Becker; and Bria and Charlee Line; many nieces, nephews and friends.
